Kitchen hardware for homes near the sea

Humidity, heat and salt air are hard on a kitchen. Choose hinges, runners, handles and materials that keep working year after year.

A kitchen on Koh Samui works in warm, humid air, often close to the sea. The parts you touch every day, and the boards behind them, need to be chosen for that climate.

01

Hinges and drawer runners

Choose quality hinges and runners with soft closing and a corrosion-resistant finish. They carry the weight of the fronts and the contents every day, so they are the last place to save money.

02

Handles, sinks and taps

Stainless steel and well-coated metals keep their surface in salt air. Check the finish of handles and taps, and choose a sink that is easy to dry and clean.

03

Boards, edges and worktops

Moisture enters a board through open edges and cut-outs. Ask for moisture-resistant boards, well-sealed edges and sealed openings around the sink and hob. Choose a worktop that tolerates water and heat.

04

Air and maintenance

Good ventilation and an extractor that removes steam protect the whole kitchen. Wipe metal parts dry and check hinges once a year: small adjustments keep doors aligned.

05

Stainless grades and fixings

Not all stainless steel behaves the same near the sea. Grade 304 is common and works well indoors when it is kept clean and dry. Grade 316, often called marine grade, contains molybdenum and resists salt better, so it is the safer choice for handles, sinks and fittings in an outdoor or terrace kitchen on Koh Samui, or in a house a few metres from the beach.

The small parts matter too. Screws, hinge plates and shelf supports are often plated steel even when the visible hardware is stainless, and rust stains will run from them first. Ask what the fixings are made of. Avoid mixing different metals in direct contact in wet areas, such as aluminium profiles with plain steel screws, because the pair corrodes faster than either metal alone.

06

Handle-free fronts in humid air

Handle-free kitchens are popular in modern villas, and there are two main ways to build them. Channel profiles, usually anodised aluminium, are set into the cabinet so you grip the edge of the front. They have no moving parts and cope well with humidity, as long as the profile and its screws are of suitable materials.

Push-to-open fittings use a spring or a small mechanism behind the door. They work, but in humid air fronts can move slightly, and the gaps that push systems rely on need checking more often. Electric opening systems add motors and wiring inside the cabinet, which is one more thing that can fail in a house that is often empty. For a holiday villa on Koh Samui, simple channels or a good pull handle are usually the lowest-maintenance choice.

07

Hardware that survives guests

A kitchen in a rental villa is used by many hands, and not always gently. Doors get swung open against the end stop, drawers get loaded with heavy bottles and children hang on handles. Choose hinges with an opening limiter where a door could hit a wall or an appliance, and drawer runners with a load rating that matches the contents, especially for pan drawers and the bin.

Fix handles through the front with two screws rather than one, so they cannot twist loose. Avoid delicate fittings such as narrow wire baskets on thin runners or swing-out corner mechanisms that need careful use; a deep drawer or a simple shelf will outlast them. Whichever system you choose, make sure the soft-close dampers can be adjusted or replaced without taking the cabinet apart.

08

Spare parts on an island

Koh Samui is supplied by ferry from the mainland, and a specific hinge or runner is not always available on the island the day you need it. Ask your kitchen maker which hardware systems are used and whether they have standard sizes and mounting patterns that are widely stocked in Thailand. Common systems can be repaired with parts from a local hardware shop; unusual ones may mean waiting for a delivery.

A small box of spares kept in the villa is cheap insurance: two or three hinges with their mounting plates, a pair of drawer runners for the most common drawer size, a few handles from the same batch and a touch-up stick for the front colour. Label the box and tell your villa manager where it is, so a loose door can be fixed in one visit.

09

Care before and after the rains

On the island the heaviest rain usually falls from around October to December, later than in much of Thailand. That makes September a good time for a kitchen hardware check: tighten handle screws, adjust doors that have dropped, clean drawer runners of sand and crumbs and look under the sink for any drip. A light wipe of metal parts with a dry cloth removes the salt film that holds moisture.

After the rainy season, look again for swelling at the bottom of fronts, rust spots on screws and hinges that have become stiff. Catching these early means a quick adjustment instead of a replacement. If you would like us to look at hardware for a new or existing kitchen, send the room measurements and a few photos.
